Play custom music in Battlefield Vietnam
A guide to preparing and substituting your own music for the music that plays in Battlefield Vietnam.

Rating:

If you like playing Battlefield Vietnam (read the review) then you'll be familure with the great 60's music that you can play on the radio when you are in a vehicle, plane, helicopter or gun battery.

When you're in any of these vehicles, simply press the "0" key (zero is the default key - unless you have changed it in your profile) and a list of music tracks will appear and you can select which track to listen to.

Eventually though, there's only so much 60's music you can listen too and you may feel the need to put some more contemporary music in the game.

There are two ways to do this,

  1. Add your own custom MP3s
This method is the easiest, you simply add your MP3s into the correct directory in Battlefield Vietnam Directory and you can select these tracks by pressing "0"

The only problem with this setup is that other players in the game will only hear the original Vietnam music when you go past.

  2. Use the BFV Music Tools Patcher
This method is more complex but very rewarding. Other users in the game will be able to hear the music you choose (provided they have run the same patch themselves)

You'll need a version of Goldwave (shareware) and the BFV Music Patcher (freeware)

The rest of this guide shows you how to use Goldwave and the BFV Music tools to get the best results with the second option.

Setup Goldwave

Your mp3s will need to be amplified and then normalised somewhat to sound good in the game. If you're a SoundForge Guru, you may be able to adapt the settings here to work for you, however we found that the easiest way was to setup Goldwave to do the job and use the batch processing feature to save you time.

GoldWave Instructions

Step 1: Mono
Convert your music file to a mono 16bit wav file.

Step 2: LowPAss High Pass filter
Click Effect->Filter->Low/HighPass

The settings for the Low/Highpass should be:
Initial cutoff: 80
Final Cutoff: 80
Check: Highpass
Check: static
Steepness: 10
Save this as a preset.

Step3: Compression
Click Effect->Compressor/Expander
Multiplier(db): -40.0
Threshold(db): -6.0
Attack(s): 0.0
Release(s): 0.0
Mode: Compressor
Settings: Anticipate Attach (checked)
Settings: Use Smoother (not checked)
Save this as a preset.

Step4: Normalisation
Click Effect->Volume->Match
Average(db): -8.4

(Goldwave Instructions adapted from Mindslayer 's instructions at 24th MID)

When you have completed this process you can convert all your mp3s in one go using the batch processing feature.

Setup MRFA Builder

Open the MRFA builder up and select the first "slot" (A) in the table

Click the Browse button to select one of the .wav files you created using Goldwave previously

Image

Type a display name in the Title Box (this it the name that is displayed in the list when you press "0" in a vehicle)

That's it, rinse and repeat these instructions selecting the next available slot (slot B, slot C..) in the list for each track.

When you're finished, Select the file menu and choose "Save project" to save your current settings.

Then open the file menu again and select "build MRFA"

Setup BFV MusicPatcher

Launch the BFV MusicPatcher and select your Music patch file (the MRFA file you just created in the last step)

Then select your Battlefield Vietnam Folder (where the game is installed)

Image

Click the Backup Originals to preserve the original music in the game and then click the "Apply the Music Patch" to substitute your custom music for the original music.

You will need to copy the .MRFA file you created in the previous step to each computer you want to hear your custom music and then repeat this last step on each computer

Fire up Battlefield Vietnam, jump in a vehicle, press "0" to select your cool new music!

For all the clan members out there, it's great to have themed music for your clan battles!

If you want live air traffic chatter, just leave this page open while you play (if there's no sound it may be because the skys are clear or click here)

You need to fiddle with the normalise settings in Goldwave to make the mp3 louder

Mate, This isnt working. It keeps saying ''One or more items is not vaild. Unable to build'', well how come to the right the Status says ''OK''? I have a fully licensed version on Goldwave and followed your guide. the ONLY part I couldn't do was the Final Cutoff because it's Greyed out completely. I converted it to using Save As : Wave PCM Signed 16 bit 22050 Hz, 352 kbps, mono, this seemed the closest. I beg you help me. I haven't played BFV in a long time and I thought of this to try out... My song is ''Ray Manzarek & Rick and The Ravens - Geraldine'' a 'Nam song. Email is james007m007@hotmail.co.uk if you can solve it. Please do!. :)

FOR THOSE HAVING TROUBLE WITH FINAL CUTOFF BEING GREY....DO THIS! I too had this problem and it took a while to figure out, but it's an easy fix.... Select the "dynamic" box under the settings (right below the initial and final cutoff). This will allow you to make the adjustment to the final cutoff. Once you make the change, select "static" again. It will keep the value on the final cutoff at 80. As for the error message, sorry I can't help with that. Maybe correcting the final cutoff value will fix it. Good luck! Hope this helps!
