Getting bored with what's offered on your TV? Fear not! There are plenty of free Internet TV software that will allow you to watch hundreds of channels from around the world. All you need is a broadband connection, a computer and you're all set to go! In this article, we'll take a look at some free internet tv software that's available out there.

Joost ™

 Image

Joost™ is created by Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis (founders of Kazaa and Shype). Boasting 28,000+ shows with videos added daily, Joost™ is an on-demand TV service based on P2PTV technology. Joost™ currently has licensing agreements with Viacom Inc (owner of BET, MTV and Paramount), MOS TV, CBS, Warner Music and many more.

Good
  • Quality is really good even when running in full-screen mode
  • Has got in-built instant messaging system for use with Gmail/Jabber
  • Channel chat allows viewers of same channel to communicate with each other
  • On-demand TV allows you to select what programs you want to watch and when you want it
  • Licensing agreement with many big production companies may mean exclusive content to be seen in future

Bad
  • Need to register an account to use
  • Not for people who want to watch international free-to-air channels

You can download Joost™ Beta 1.1.8 from http://www.joost.com

TVUPlayer

 Image

TVUPlayer is based on the P2PTV protocol. Operated by TVUNetworks, there are over 100 free-to-air and cable channels available from around the world. You can tune in to channels like Comedy Central, Sci-Fi, Fox News and many others.

Good
  • Many free-to-air channels from around the world
  • Relatively small download
  • Hassle free set-up, no need to sign up for any account
  • Easy to use and navigate around

Bad
  • Video quality gets a little "crunchy" in full screen mode

A note: some people on the internet are trying to sell this free internet tv software when you can actually download it from tvunetworks for free. Shame on J.B and his ugly website (I'm not going to post his URL here to help him get additional hits).

Sopcast

Like manImagey free Internet TV applications, Sopcast is also based on the P2PTV protocol. There are over 100 free-to-air and cable channels available from around the world. You can tune in to channels like National Geographic, Discovery, and movie channels like Star Movies (see full list here http://www.sopcast.com/channel/)

Good
  • Works in LINUX!
  • Many free-to-air and cable channels from around the world
  • Small download size! Only 3 MBs.
  • Can be embedded into web pages
  • Can broadcast your own media
  • Quality is pretty good in full screen mode
Bad
  • Can be a little hard to navigate in full screen mode

You can download Sopcast from http://www.sopcast.com

Of all the software available, we'd have to recommend using Sopcast, for it's speed and size. For those of you at work that want to watch TV but can't get it through the office firewall, this might be a solution.
