680i LT No sound
How to fix the sound problem on XFX Nforce 680i LT motherboards

I purchased an XFX NForce 680i LT motherboard along with a Q6600 quad chip.
Because I put 6 GB or RAM in the PC I chose to run Windows XP(64).
Everything worked fine under XP(64), all the original drivers on the CD installed fine.
However, because of Windows XP(64)'s limited support of hardware I found that all my no-brand USB devices, such as sound cards and cameras didn't work under windows XP(64). Furthermore I discovered that VMWare server's bridged mode does not work under windows XP(64).
So I decided to dual boot windows XP(32)and windows XP(64). (32) for work and (64) for games.
I partitioned the drive allocating 100GB per OS and the rest as combined storage.
I used partition magic 8.0 for this and I did it with no backups which I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. I was lucky - you may not be.
Everything worked fine and I had the two OSs working along side each other fine, however i noticed that there was no sound under Windows XP(32).
The driver had installed without problem but after rebooting there was no sound card listed in the device manager
The sound card worked fine under Windows XP(64) but not at all under Windows XP(32)
Looking at the other devices listed in the device manager under windows XP(32) it became obvious that the sound card was registering as an unknown PCI device.
After some investigation it appears that there may be some compatibility issues with the Microsoft UAA drivers.
- I installed the hotfx, (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111)
...but it made no difference.
- I slip streamed SP3 into my copy on XP and re-installed that
...no dice.
- I put a second sound card in the PC hoping it would 'wake' the first card up
...nada.
- I searched all over XFX's website and trawled forums looking for more info.
...zip
So as I was taking out the secondary sound card I thought I should try and do the same thing with the on-board sound card.
Obviously because it's soldered directly to the motherboard you cannot remove the sound card - but you can turn it off in the bios.
So;
- I uninstalled existing install of the sound card drivers
- Disabled the card in the BIOS.
- Installed the drivers under windows XP32
- Rebooted the PC
- Enable the sound card in the BIOS
- Windows prompted that it had found new hardware, specifically a PCI card, and then a moment later a microsoft UAA device
- It wanted to search for the UAA driver, I selected 'automatically locate the driver'
...the sound card came up, working fine - BINGO!
So the bottom line is that by disabling the card first, installing drivers and then enabling the card, i got the sound to work.
Now that the board is working well under both operating systems, we're keen to find out how much you can overclock this motherboard and chip configuration. I've heard that it'll go as high at 3.3GHZ - Stay tuned for the details....
