Homeworld
Winner of GameSpot.com's gamer survey 'Best looking game ever!'
Rating: Ok this game is pretty old, but it is one of my favourites. Your
race has discovered a star map. A star map which shows that your race
is descended from another race and also where to find them. So your race builds a huge spaceship, capable of navigating the stars to find the Homeworld. Unfortunately by building the star ship your race unknowingly breaks a 5000 year old treaty and the trouble starts... I've often thought (as I watched many a b-grade Sci-Fi) That if you
simply had enough cool space scenes you could put them all together and
create a rather cool film, sans actors! - Well Sierra has finally done
it, and it is a long way from Kings Quest! Homeworld is a 3d Space strategy game, you can completely control all the camera angles using the
mouse to allow you to get the best view of the action. You move pieces
using a 3d stellar map and if you're like me and used to moving pieces
on a two-dimensional board then this can take some getting used to. - I
sent some support ships off to help my armada only to find they were
sitting directly above my armada,
but some 2 light-years away. In space there is no up or down and it is
helpful to abandon this concept as quickly as possible. The
single player missions are very well produced. The introduction movie
builds a very real environment and playing the single player missions -
I was just about in tears when my stasis pods with the last few
surviving Terrans in it were blown out of orbit. It's hard to describe
but somebody at sierra obviously put some time into building a
convincing plot. Enough with the melodramatics ....What's the game play like? Well
it is a little different from you standard strategy game. Because the
game is viewed in 3d it is imperative to have a solid knowledge of how
to manipulate the camera angles to control you view. We recommend doing
the training missions included with Homeworld to get a good
understanding of this. When you do finally beseech war on your
fellow Galaxarians you will enjoy lining 50 or so ships up in space and
doing your own impression of a Vogon constructor fleet! There is no piece limit in Homeworld, but again there is a fairly limited number of ships you can build. There are patches available for download from Sierra as well as a whole heap of 'mods' you can run with homeworld. There are 3rd Party mods for Wing Commander, Star trek, Star Wars & many more.. We've successfully played this game on average machines with and without Voodoo (although we recommend it!) Hey! Homeworld II is out! Homeworld Search for Homeworld Mods on Altavista Sierra
